Week unclouded. Health risks, school hours and victim support.

News can be overwhelming to follow. Important news bites can get lost amongst all the hard and breaking news. Here are a couple of the headlines from this week and beyond that impact women.

Dangerous pregnancy supplements. Who is responsible?

The pregnancy supplement Folidi - which contains vitamin D3, follic acid and iodine - was recalled due to dangerously high levels of Vitamin D.

Several women, some pregnant, have been hospitalised and had to be treated for high calcium levels in their system brought about by the vitamin spike. The women are considering taking legal action, as are the health authorities. The women now want answers: how was this allowed to happen?

Surely there must be a way to better regulate what is offered to patients, especially pregnant ones?

Keep them in school longer - many parents say

This comes as no surprose. One in three parents of children under 16 want fewer school holidays, with one in five wanting longer school hours, according to this year’s edition of the annual State of the Nation study.

These numbers drop sharply among people without children under the age of 16, with people who are parents of older children, or not parents at all, less eager on the idea, Times of Malta reported.

We hear this from time to time - the need to increase school hours and slash the holidays. Is this the solution for parents and children?

New services for victims of crime

The Victim Support Agency within the police force announced new services offered to victims of crime who are summoned to testify in court.

Childcare services will be offered to victims who have children up to the age of three. Home care services will be offered if the victims have a dependent at home with no one available to care for them. Those who need this support can fill in a form.
