A decade of ‘Women for Women’: 10 lessons from a growing community

This week, the Facebook community Women for Women celebrated its 10th anniversary. A decade after founding the group, to create a safe space where women can share their experiences and discuss issues that affect them, FRANCESCA FENECH CONTI reflects on the lessons she’s learned as the community has grown to include over 60,000 members.

Lesson One

To try not to jump to conclusions or assume anything about anyone – we never know what the person on the other end has been through.

Lesson Two

The importance of work for women. Many women who didn’t work throughout their lives may find themselves without a pension, especially if they separate late in life.

Lesson Three

Domestic violence is much more common than we know and happens in all strata of society.

Lesson Four

Financial independence is the key to a woman’s freedom.

Lesson Five

A problem shared is a problem halved.

Lesson Six

Marital or partner rape is a reality that many women experience but do not openly discuss.

Lesson Seven

I was ignorant of many social issues that came to light thanks to the anonymous posts shared regularly on the group.

Lesson Eight

Many women are not aware of how their bodies work and still believe old-fashioned myths and housewives’ tales.

Lesson Nine

Patience, kindness and honesty are the key to creating trust and credibility.

Lesson Ten

It takes passion, and a lot of patience, to keep 60,000 women happy.
